"Fully licensed and insured"...why is that important?
Sugar Buzz!, LLC is a home-based business. I work out of a smoke-free and pet-free environment. An inspector from the VA Department of Agriculture thoroughly inspects my kitchen, just like they do for a store-front bakery. Sugar Buzz! is held to the same cleanliness, sanitation, and procedural standards as any other licensed food provider in Virginia. Most event venues require proof of business insurance before they can allow a cake to be delivered and served at their facility, and Sugar Buzz! can provide that documentation for them.
How do I make sure you are available for my event date?
A specific date is not considered reserved for your event until a deposit has been received by Sugar Buzz!, LLC. Please note that all deposits are nonrefundable.
Do you offer tastings?
Tastings are available for orders of $150 and above. Please contact Sugar Buzz for an appointment.
How much do you charge for a cake?
This is a tricky one, and not because I am trying to be difficult. Sugar Buzz! cakes are custom creations. The size, complexity of design, and type of frosting all must be taken into account for pricing purposes. The starting price point for a filled cake with buttercream frosting and decorations is $3.50 per serving. The starting price point for a filled cake with fondant covering and decorations is $4.50 per serving. Cake prices start at $90.
But I can pick up a cake from (insert big-box retailer's name of your choice) for around $35 ...!?
Yes, you can. But here's why they are so inexpensive at that place.
Cake layers (white or chocolate only) were baked months ago in a huge factory, frozen, maybe covered with white "frosting", frozen again, then shipped to the nearest distribution center, probably thawing a bit during the road trip. Eventually, they traveled several hundreds of miles to the location near you, probably thawing a bit again during this road trip. Oh, and there's a good chance they thawed a bit again when the truck unloaded the pallets, so they got re-frozen at the store. The "bakery department" thawed it, covered it in white "frosting" if it didn't arrive that way, and froze it again. When they got a cake order, they thawed it again, then added on the standard borders, squiggles, and plastic decorations as dictated by their corporate procedure book.
The "frosting" was also made months ago in a factory and has been in a 5-gallon plastic bucket ever since. "Vanilla flavor" doesn't contain any real vanilla, "chocolate flavor" doesn't contain any real chocolate, and "but-r-cream" doesn't contain any butter!
Take a good whiff the next time you are at that store's bakery department. It might smell like bread (if it's the day they bake the frozen bread dough), but I bet it doesn't smell like cake!
What is fondant? How does it taste?
Fondant is a sugar dough that's used to model/mold cake decorations or to cover the entire cake itself. It tastes similar to vanilla fudge. If you watch those TV cake shows, the cakes are almost always covered in fondant. It gives the cake an extremely smooth finish, and it allows for very detailed decorations.
What flavors do you offer?
The possibilities are endless, but here's a few ideas to get you started. If you want a flavor not listed, just ask!
